THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
===================
(for September 25, 1993)
Thus far, both World Championship matches have produced some
interesting chess, but no real surprises--at least not over
the boards.
The PCA contest between FIDE renegades' Kasparov and Short
looks to be a short match (in more ways than one). To the
dismay of the Englishman's hometown supporters, the
challenger has appeared utterly overawed by Kasparov. It
would seem that Short viewed his chances as being slim and none
before the first pawn was ever pushed. Employing wild-eyed
tactics from the start, Short's play could perhaps best be
characterized as that of a desperado.
In light of such questionable match strategy and his previous
lack of success against Kasparov (1 win, 12 losses and a few
draws), Short's 5 point deficit after only 9 games (0 wins, 5
losses, 4 draws) begins to appear rather predictable.
Meanwhile, most of the action in the FIDE-sanctioned World
Championship being played in the Netherlands between Karpov
and Dutchman Jan Timman has taken place away from the board.
With Karpov leading 7-5 at the halfway point and both players
packing their bags for the Persian Gulf nation of Oman, the
site of the second half of the match, suddenly chaos struck.
Not only did the Sultan of Oman renege on his promise to
contribute to the prize fund, but the Dutch sponsors for the
first twelve games found themselves unable to meet their
financial commitment, as well! Without a prize fund and a
playing site, it is unclear if the match will even continue.
This week's game features a patented Kasparov attack against
the enemy king in the seventh game.
